[FoW] Some more WIP. 2AD M4A1 76mm and Autosaharianas

Don't worry everybody I did get some M18 Hellcats in the end and they are being painted as we speak. BF M18's are kinda fiddly, resin mistakes and pewter flash and bent tracks. Still they look good in the end, pics soon.

Love these Plastic Soldier models.

Reasonably happy with the paint

Maybe just antennae next
With these I can field a respectable force of  17 targets for my German opponents.

Captured Morris AAA trucks

The lovely AS42 with 37mm, foregound and Breda 2cm, back

Ah my lovelies
I've got several more to do. Luckily my mate Andy has taken the opportunity to knock together some Chevy trucks and Willys jeeps into some rag tag force called the LRDG.(!)

Also big ups to Seattle people, go Seahawks! Thanks Keane, now I've got a good pile of stuff to kitbash into my SciFi skirmish force for Fallout.

[FoW] Panzered!

So I was keen to get some more practice against a different German list. I had asked around and Josh was available. He has a truly fearsome list containing;
HQ, Pzkfw IV x2
Tank Platoon, 4 Panther
Tank Platoon, Pzkfw IV x4
Assault Gun Platoon StuH x4
Recon Platoon 8 rads x2
I'm pretty sure they were confident Vets or something.
Josh did a great job setting up the table and I showed up late as usual. I hadn't prepped at all and was running my exact same list from last week.

Sherman Spearhead Ninjas strike!

We rolled Hasty Attack and I took that to heart. Despite the fact that I was facing a ton, or rather tons of Jerry armor! I ninja moved my Sherman's up and they pounced on the StuH's holding the center.

CO and XO loitering on the left flank
My Armored Recon Platoon was on the right, cowering. My TD's were unpopped in the center waiting for the big tanks to take the Sherman attack as bait.(?!)

Oh my that is a lot of tanks
The Panthers were in Immediate Ambush and Josh popped them in the center, just behind his StuH's

The German Commander surveys the killing fields
The two HQ panzers were forcing my right flank recon platoon to rethink, "why we fight.'

Which way to run!
Oh shit! Wait, remove gone to ground or something... Whatttt!?

Not according to plan!
We pop one StuH and bail another. Not he effect I was hoping for, but honestly I shouldn't have expected more... In return we get caned, but it takes a bunch of shots. Both platoons have to shoot at the Shermans and one survives

The Germans counterattack!
My air support refuses to show up setting the precedent for the rest of the game. One aircraft found the battlefield... all game.80

Killing a panzer IV with armored cars! Woot!
Coolest part of the game for me! Killing tanks with armored cars! Well a second tank with an armored car. If I knew then that it would be my last kill I would have drank more heavily!

There's no place like home, there's no place like home...
My tank destroyers realize that since no one else is showing up they had better get shooting! Plus, you know Panthers!

StuH bags an M20
Trying to broaden the deployment possibilties for the TD platoon an M20 goes for broke.

The Combat Engineers finally show up after the M10's appear.
Unable to get the flank, all of our shots bounce... we know the return fire won't bounce. (I hit them five times?) Arrgghhh!

In the distance you can see the light tanks on an objective...
Finally reinforcements! The light tanks show up and charge for the objective. We hope that all the shooting in the center will delay any reaction so they double. I also mistakenly think that they are out of maneuver and shooting  range.
They are in range of Josh's StuH's which charge through the woods and engage destroying the entire platoon easily. Then the Panthers obliterate the M10's!
I knew it was coming. But I keep juking around hoping that air or arty will work. But nothing.
In the end it's the Combat Engineers and the 105's holding off the Panthers and two Armored Recon platoons shooting it out at point blank range with the StuH's and Panzer IV's.
Good game Josh! Well played and I just didn't have any luck, and versus this list I needed a least a bit.

[FoW] Ticking all the boxes with Armored Recon

Hadn't played Flames since my debacle against Simon a month ago.
I had arranged to play my mate Jim and his Panzergrenadiers. Which I found to my shock includes two Tiger I's. I had thought he was kidding. The nerve.
Two! I needed a plan and a good one. How am I going to kill two Tigers?

Anybody seen a Tiger?
The San Jose High School Auto Shop class of '41 European Tour '44 and '45!
2nd Armored Division Armored Recon Troop
HQ of two M8
Two combat platoons of 2 M8 and two recon jeeps each
4 Stuarts
4 Shermans
Full Combat Engineer Platoon with 4 Bazooka
Full TD platoon of M10's
105 battery
Limited P47

Panzergrenadiers covering my left approach.

Spearhead means Ninjas disguised as Sherman tanks!
I got some good rolls and got three hits. One bounced. Then I called in the arty. Got a bail out of it, then the platoon skedaddled. Lucky!
Dug in veteran infantry is a nightmare though, it took me too much time to clear them. I removed GTG with my recon and it still took ages. Half of the teams survived to the end. I never touched the platoon in the buildings.

Panzergrenadiers rushing for the far objective

We caught them in the open with a couple P47's. Jim made all three saves without breaking a sweat.

Nasty little infantry guns
Like the crossroads, the high ground is already occupied. No problem we'll just lift GTG, and call in arty.

Those TD guys are such boots, hiding behind a wood, mumbling about tigers.
Uh guys, who was gonna make their roll again? Nobody made their rolls. Except for our roll to disengage!

Luckily the other car got away. Recce disengagment!
Maybe the TD boys knew what was up after all. The other armored moved out of range. The jeeps were already in cover as well.

Stuarts doubling past the recon jeeps! Huzzah!
On my turn three I got my reserves of the Combat Engineers, they entered the board in a fusilade of gunfire driving off the friendly air first and then the entire platoon of Panzergrenadiers.
His closest other unit was over ten inches from my newly arrived reinforcements. And then his reserves failed to show anyway. No chance to throw me off.
Good fun game Jim!

Dice! They even worked sometimes!
All the boxes ticked, I am a special rules whore. It's official.
Recce deployment.
Spearhead.
Eyes and Ears
Plt Commander spotting for arty.
Time on target

I didn't however get a chance to try out my Tiger strategy. Either P47's or TD's and smoke.
Combined with a lot of targets!

Getting back on the horse...

They look naked for now, but that's 35 dice of MG's in MW!

Had a great vacation, saw a lot of very interesting things and places and some of it will even drive me to model and wargame better and more. Since I've been back I've had a  few projects in the works. First off is the above. MW Armored Cavalry M3 armored cars. Now, in Flames of War V3 the cav is even better! Wheeled movement is further and the ability to remove gone to ground is an ability for individual teams when they pass a skill test! Cool stuff! (For me anyway, being a bit of a cav specialist/ addicted to pennants.)

This is in here though, because I successfully stripped a bunch of paint off of a couple of them. I used toilet cleaner and elbow grease. Is there Simple Green here? I have done a ton of custom fitting and plan on fully bristling them up with mg's and jerry cans etc for Tunisia, Sicily, Italy.

Follow me into the breech tovarich!

Also in the works are my Impetus reinforcements [FL with javelin], diguised as a SAGA Warband. My Gripping Beast Slavs are pretty close...

Our armor makes us look like vikings but...

...as are my Warriors [FP with spears]...

These Crusader minis are awesome. Kyivan Rus!

...but my coolest will be the Varangians [FP!]. Ahem, Kyivan Rus.

No longer as blank as this

They are all reliant on my next phase of shield manufacture and artistry. I've been finding some cool ideas though and actually got a good start tonight.

Here are some of the idea's that I've dug up and like. I'm a sucker for the ouroboros of course.
I have starts on most of these.

Lastly are my SAGA objective, fatigue markers, and my wizard. These are great looking minis from Crusader and easily fit into most warbands.
Yes, my fracking wizard;-)

4th Cavalry put to the Gyorshadtest

On a different plane of our reality, the 4th Cavalry Group was shifted to the Crimea and became part of a counterattack supporting the Soviet spring offensive of 1943. This was where it encountered the Hungarian 1 Armored Corps, or the "Gyorshadtest" as it was previously known.

In real life, one of my mates from our RPG group, that plays Earthdawn at the moment, realized that he needed to throw down with the new FoW V3 rules. I thought that was a brilliant idea so we met at Cavs on Thurs.
Like me, John prefers historical combined arms lists, they get the job done usually. His one weird model, in fact the impetus for this force, was the Nimrod SP armored AA gun. I was checking them out as we set up and admiring the camo scheme, it is a cool modern looking anti-aircraft gun, 4cm.
I was running my MW (Con-Trained) Cavalry, 3 x short Cbt platoons, (one was dismounted with two carbine teams and a bazooka team!), Stuarts x5, Shermans x4, Assault Guns, 105's and Limited Air (P40's)
John had Con Vets with two full platoons of motorized infantry, 8cm mortars, 105's, Panzer IV's x3, and a pair of the aforementioned Nimrods.
In the new book there is a slightly different scheme for determining scenarios, the scenarios are a bit different as well, but we've seen them in tourneys lately so they've been tested. We got Counterattack, which is similar to Breakout, but neither of us had played it before.
Both being Mech, we rolled and I was the attacker.

John had two platoons in reserve, the Panzers and a Motor Platoon, I had to work fast.
You know how I roll...

Summon Sacrificial Stuart Platoon! Davai! Davai!

Meanwhile, my cav patrol holds the center with the XO.

Then there was lots of shooting, mostly by artillery that couldn't hit anything, unless of course you were AA arty! The old triple A, self propelled, devils from hell!

You beauties.

You devils!
I try to threaten his left with my dismounted recon boys.

Pointed right at his artillery battery! (Later on they got two guns!)
Meanwhile my right is trying to block his link up attempt that will come through soon. I've got a cav patrol holding the center right, the Lt tanks holding the objective and my mediums, (Shermans) waiting for the inevitable, right on the border.

The Nimrods finish off my Assault Gun platoon. I frown.

Then his Pzkw IV's show up and we begin an 'exchange of fire'.

Somewhere around here one of my Shermans is killed by the Hungarian 105's.

Crap! That's my template!
The big changes in V3 for this game were my movement bonuses for the jeep and wheeled. Even bigger were my saves for the recon jeeps, now at 3+.
This did not save my tank though. Back to my right flank, ie where he needs to eject my Staurts from the contested objective.

His Infantry are still holding the center, and frankly I'm afeared to attack with my few infantry stands. But if he moves, he will face a ton of MG fire from my cav patrol.

The tank battle continues with multiple shots glancing off of the front armor of several tanks of both sides. For several turns... finally my 'P40's' kill one, then it's three on two.

Finally it comes down to the tank battle and the motor troops that show up. He fails to debuss and my MG's have to feed do they do. The few teams that survive get assaulted and destroyed.

Around now the last surviving Nimrod makes a desperate double move towards the objective. It is met by .50 cal fire and killed twice. Finally. A narrow win, it came down to dice and gunnery.

Super fun game John!
I'm stoked that I've finally got a mid war army to run.
